A lot of economists argue that a purchasing power parity step of GDP is superior. Any step like this will always be incorrect, but in principle it is comparing apples to apples. We presume that tables offer for $500 all over, that shoes offer for $60, and so on.

It is common for political leaders and pundit types to hypothesize on when or whether Chinas economy will pass the US economy as the worlds biggest. The newest episode to cross my course was a column by David Wallace in the New York Times.
There is little reason for this sort of speculation. China is currently the worlds largest economy, its economy is more than 20 percent larger than the United States economy, according to the IMF. In addition, it is growing significantly more rapidly (presuming they do not continue their absolutely no COVID-19 policy forever), so it is forecasted to be more than a 3rd larger than the US economy by the end of the decade.
